Degrees of crimes are set out for the purpose of making the sentencing process clearer for courts. The underlying definition of the crime will be the same for each degree, but aggravating and mitigating factors will differ, and the reason why we care about whether those factors are absent or present will be because the higher the degree, the worse the sentence.
